Building collapses in Abuja and killed 4, injured others

Note:  This story contains an image some may consider offensive. By Henry Umoru
ABUJA-TRAGEDY struck, yesterday, in Nyanya, a suburb of Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, following the collapse of a two-storey building under construction at the back of a new generation bank.
According to a source, the building came down at 10.20am. The building was alleged to be an extension of the bank.
Two buildings under construction had to be demolished before the machines could be moved in to evacuate the debris in order to rescue those trapped under the collapsed building.
The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, the FCT Department of Development Control and the Federal Fire Service were on ground to save the situation.
As at press time, about 12 persons were still trapped in the debris, four brought out dead, while two, who were seriously injured, had to be rushed to Nyanya General Hospital.
A rescued victim.
Meanwhile, Head, Public Relations of NEMA, Mr. Yushau Shuaib, said, yesterday, that the organisation as well as other agencies had so far rescued 12 victims of the collapsed building, just as it admitted that a woman was among the dead.
Speaking on the development, an eyewitness said: “The artisans on the site resumed work around 9am. It was barely one and half hours after they started work that we heard a loud noise. We thought it was a bomb. Although the area is swampy, there are other buildings on the same plot of land that are still standing. Most of the materials that are being used on the site are of  low quality. The foundation is faulty.
The collapsed building.
“I think the owner of the house was bent on completing the house within a stipulated time. Construction of the house had been too fast.”

US embassy says Nigerians should apply for VISA 1 year before traveling

Mr Stephen Frahm, Consular Chief of  the U.S Embassy, Wednesday, in Abuja  advised Nigerians wishing to travel to that country to apply  for visas at least a year ahead  of  time. He said this at the  embassy’s monthly briefing  which had consular operations  as the focus.
Frahm said the number of   applicants  outnumber those that can be accommodated daily, noting that  this  contributes to delays.
“ In Nigeria,  there are a greater number of  applicants than we have the ability to process. The number of people that can be processed in a given day is finite and that’s why it takes a long time in many instances to get an appointment.
“ Here in Abuja,  we are able to schedule about 200; in Lagos they do about 350 to 400, so that’s about 600 a day.
“ We know that the demand is higher than that but we just don’t have the logistics to do more than that right now, so that’s why the delay.
“ The visa process should not be that last decision you make before you travel. It should be the first decision in planning. This is critical to making it possible for us to provide that service to the applicant,’’ he said.
He  said applicants should make their visa applications online and ensure they visit  the website for clarification if they had to.
Frahm also advised  applicants to fill out their applications correctly and give information in line with what they provided to make them qualify for the visa.
“ Most people are bad liars.  With the way our law is written, if you misrepresent the facts then you are not credible and we are forced to refuse.
“You may be a legitimate traveller, but because during the interview you did not present yourself correctly,  then we have no alternative but to refuse,’’ he said.
Frahm urged  those who wished to apply for visas to the U.S not to be deterred by the processes.
The processes,  he said, were to ensure that all visa applications complied with the Immigration Nationalities Act of the United States.
He said the immigration activities were of  important commercial value, noting  that Nigeria has the highest number of applicants among the ECOWAS states with 60 per cent to 70 per cent of visa applications approved this year.
Also speaking, Deborah Maclean, Information Officer in the U.S embassy,  called on applicants to be truthful about their reasons  for travelling  in order to get a positive response from the embassy.
“You must be prepared and that includes planning in advance for your interview, having the information available for why you personally know you are going because each interview is a personal interview.

UNICEF says 33m Nigerians defecate in open places

Note: Story contains an image some may consider offensive
The UNICEF says an estimated 33 million Nigerians still practice open defecation in different parts of the country.
Dr Suomi Sakai, UNICEF’s Country Representative and Chief Ambassador, said this at the commemoration of the World Sanitation Day on Tuesday in Abuja.

“The most worrisome of all the unsanitary practices is the high rate of open defecation practice in the country.
“It is estimated that about 33 million Nigerians defecate in the open, depositing about 1.7m tonnes of faeces into the environment annually,’’ she said.
Sakai said that the development had resulted in a high level of contamination of the environment in which garbage and faeces often find their way into water resources.
She stressed the need for awareness creation among the populace and the imperative of imbibing sanitary practices for improved health and socio-economic well-being of the citizenry.
The Chief Ambassador, however, commended the Federal Ministry of Environment for providing a viable platform for discussing and analysing environmental sanitation issues for sustainable development.
According to her, the occasion provides an opportunity for the review of commitment and support to improve the status of environmental sanitation in the country.
She said that the theme of the celebration which is “Cleanliness: Gateway to Healthy Living,’’ was timely and appropriate, considering the present poor environmental sanitation practices and its consequences on the life of the people.
She maintained that high morbidity and mortality rates in the country, prompted by cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery and typhoid, all sanitation-related diseases, were consequences of poor sanitation and hygiene practice.
“Children under five are the most vulnerable to the effects of poor sanitation and hygiene in the country.
“ It is estimated that that nearly 200,000 children under five years die annually due to diarrhoea while respiratory infections kill another 240,000 young children every year,’’ she added.

D'prince, Olamide, YQ and others take To dangerous picture planking on Twitter

Planking game has swept twitter. Still don't know why people are crazy about this silly stunt.
The lying down game (also known as planking, or face downs) is an activity, popular in various parts of the world, consisting of lying face down in an unusual or incongruous location. The hands must touch the sides of the body, and having a photograph of the participant taken and posted on the Internet is an integral part of the game.Players compete to find the most unusual and original location in which to play.
The location should also be as public as possible, and as many people as possible should be involved.
I heard a man died while planking, fell from a balcony
Here are pictures of our own celebs; Dprince, YQ, Ebuka, Olamide and Dr. Sid planking.*sigh* Will be posting more celebs planking pix soon.

Late Titilayo, with the man who killed her, her husband
I don't have the full story, but the sad news is all over Facebook. The man pictured above, Arowolo Akolade L, allegedly stabbed his wife to death and cut her into pieces on Friday June 24, 2011.

Kolade, was claimed to be a born again Christian, and Titilayo had been married for two years and had a daughter. No one knows exactly what transpired the day he killed his wife, only, family and friends got worried when Titi didn't show up at work or contact anyone for days. The police were called in and when they got to the couple's home, they found Titi's dismembered body and a distraught Kolade there. He has since been arrested.
Friends say Titi had left Kolade sometime last year, after he beat her mercilessly, but went back to him, only to be killed. The late Titi was a staff of Skye Bank, Victoria Island. May her soul rest in peace...amen.

K'Switch (Dbanj's bro) and James(Don Jazzy's Bro) goes Into Oil And Gas Business
Dbanj's blood brother, Kswitch and Don Jazzy's brother, James are really thinking big. The two brothers to naija's biggest stars were trying to make the society better and at the same time make their money when they came up with the idea of oil and gas home delivery service. I'm beginning to suspect these boyz are the brains behind the koko branded investments, for them to have . But this time its not koko oil and gas, its named after them, James n Switch Energy Limited.

JamesNswitch is an oil and gas company based in Lagos supplying door to door delivery of oil and gas to private and public premises.

Christy Essien-Igbokwe (Lady Of Songs) is dead, who sang SEUN RERE

ANOTHER SAD NEWS has just hit the Nigerian entertainment industry. The Lady of Songs, Christy Essien-Igbokwe passed away this morning, Thursday, June 30, 2011. She was 50 years old. Information on this is still sketchy by her son, Solomon, exclusively disclosed that she revealed her death earlier in the year and that it has come to pass now.

The lady of songs, Chief Christy Essien Igbokwe, MON, has been silent for 16 years. But we have not forgotten her because she left us enough materials to remember and rollick with. Her songs are evergreen and she laments the lack of songs like that in the contemporary music scene. Her last album, Mysteries of Life, was in 1994 and in-between that time and now, so many factors, including a four-year stint as the president of her beloved PMAN (Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria), have combined to delay the coming of her 11th album. The latest impediment is the imminent release of her son, Kaka's debut album.

Boko Haram kills 28 and injures several others in Maiduguri

Islamic sect, Boko Haram, yesterday ignored the presence of Joint Task Force deployed to Maiduguri to contain them, went on a fresh killing spree, killing 28 people and injuring several others within 24 hours. On Sunday night, the sect tossed bombs on a crowded beer garden in Maiduguri, Borno State capital killing at least 25 people, and struck again hours after attacking the customs area of Maiduguri where members of the Joint Task Force maintains a secretariat.
The commander of the task force on Boko Haram, Maj. Gen. Jack Okechukwu Nwaogbo, who confirmed the attack which included bomb blasts and gunfire said 3 people were killed while at least two customs officials were wounded

On Sunday night, suspected Boko Haram members riding on motorcycles attacked three different makeshift bars in the city
Witnesses said at least 25 died in the beer parlour attacks, while Nwaogbo declined to offer a casualty information yesterday during a news conference.
According to the commander, “what caused the killings of many people in the attacks were when about 10 gunmen riding seven motorcycles surrounded and took strategic positions at the beer sheds and shops and started firing at the people with their Kalashnikov rifles, before setting ablaze the entire makeshift shacks.”
2 nabbed with explosives in church
While no arrests have been made over the beer parlour attacks, he said police arrested two men carrying explosives at a church in the city. He said they had pretended they wanted to convert from Islam.
A military officer said security had been scaled up in the city following the attack.
“The JTF (Joint Task Force) began operations in Maiduguri yesterday with the deployment of more troops into the city, including 500 navy personnel,” said a senior military officer who asked not to be named as he does not have clearance to speak to journalists.

Omotola Jolade's Husband says I trusted my Wife, she can't fornicate around!

Click for Full Image Size

Some months back, news broke that the marriage of talented actress Omotola Jalade is under threat following a butt-grabbing incident by her escort at the 2011 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

In a phone chat with Captain Ekehinde by Ekerete Udoh in NewYork, Omotola’s husband he responded to the rumour.

I am very proud of my wife’s accomplishments and I join other well wishers and millions of her fans to toast her success. I’m a little surprised that instead of Nigerians celebrating her appearance at the Grammys and her, being the first Nollywood star to walk the red carpet; they are busy spreading tales and rumors that do not exist.

Truth be told, I was not angry with my wife when I saw the picture. Why should I be? I know who I married, how self-respecting she is and also the nature of her industry. She is an actress for God’s sake, and it is not out of place for actresses to appear in scenes that may look a little out of place for a married person.

The key thing is that my wife respects her marital status, and in our 15 year marriage, she has been the best woman any man could aspire to have. In spite of her stardom, at home, she is my wife. She cooks for me, takes care of the home and above all, is a great mother to our lovely children.

I sincerely would implore her fans not to buy into rumors and speculations about her marital life, because I, the husband the one that is lucky to have her as my wife is so proud of her and I continue to thank God for bringing her into my life. I could never have asked for a better wife than her” Mr. Ekeinde a commercial airline pilot had concluded.

Tokyo calls for the arrest of ex- Gov. Akala

By Ola Ajayi
ONE of the two factions of the notorious National Union of Road Transport Workers in Oyo,  Tuesday,  appeared before the Commission of Enquiry set up by Governor Abiola Ajimobi calling for the arrest and prosecution of the immediate past Governor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala.
The factional Chairman of the union, Alhaji Lateef Akinsola aka Tokyo,  while presenting his memorandum to the panel advised politicians in the state to stop meddling in the affairs of the union.
The infiltration of politicians into the union, according to him was largely responsible for the incessant bloodshed between factions of the union.
Tokyo’s faction which commended the steps taken by governor Ajimobi to stop bloodshed in the state said politicians should “hands off the affairs of the union and stop supporting one faction against the other so as to put a total end to the carnage in the state.”
The union claimed that the bloody clashes in the state that resulted in the death of scores of people should be blamed on the former governor who allegedly was partisan in handling the issue.
It also told the panel led by Justice Olagoke Ige(rtd) to make recommendation for the transfer of the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Baba Adisa Bolanta.
According to the faction’s representative,  Abass Aleshinloye,  there was enough evidence to indicted the former governor and others.
Aleshinloye said, ” we have compiled evidence which graphically shows that the killings and destruction of property are not caused by an intra-union conflict but was mainly planned and executed by Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala.
Both Late Lateef Salako a.k.a. Eleweomo and Mukaila Lamidi and Alhaji Wasiu Abubakar were only instruments in the hands of the former governor.
We maintain that neither Eleweomo nor Auxiliary had the audacity, the wherewithal or the confidence to raise up arms against other members of the union as they did in the last two years if they were not backed, empowered and bankrolled by Ex-Governor Akala”.

Madhya Pradesh state government is investigating claims that up to 300 girls were surgically turned into boys in one city after their parents paid about £2,000 each for the operations.
Women's and children's rights campaigners denounced the practice as a "social madness" that made a "mockery of women in India".
India's gender balance has already been tilted in favour of boys by female foeticide – sex selection abortions - by families who fear the high marriage costs and dowries they may have to pay. There are now seven million more boys than girls aged under six in the country.
Campaigners said the use of surgery meant that girls were no longer safe even after birth.

New York Governor approves Gay Marriage

Governor Andrew Cuomo made same-sex marriages legal in New York on Friday, a key victory for gay rights ahead of the 2012 presidential and congressional elections.

Church bans chieftancy titles, pregnancy before marriage etc...

The Diocese of Amichi, Anglican Communion, has banned new couples from celebrating church wedding before their traditional engagement. Couples in Igboland often fixed both church and traditional weddings on the same day to save cost. But the Bishop of the Diocese in Anambra State, Rt. Rev. Ephraim Ikeakor disagreed with the arrangement, and banned the practise. Ikeakor, who also banned wedding celebration for pregnant ladies, also declared as unacceptable the conferment on its members with Ozo title, especially those already admitted into Knighthood. Bishop Ikeakor, who announced these measures at the 3rd Session of the First Synod of the Diocese at Unubi, Nnewi South Local Government Areaof Anambra State, also banned its members from collecting goods on credit on behalf of the church during harvest ceremonies as well as shooting of dane guns during burial and funeral rites. He said: “It is becoming almost a tradition for church members to come early in the morning for church wedding and, thereafter, in the evening go for traditional marriage ceremony. This is unacceptable in this Diocese.“The church should be the last port of call for any marriage involving our members. No clergy man in this Diocese should be involved in conducting church wedding before traditional marriage.“We have also observed with shame and dismay the and ungodly practise of conducting weddings for pregnant ladies in our churches. This is both unChristian and un-Anglican.“We will no longer allow the unregenerated members of our church to set some unwholesome precedence and standard in the Church. “In as much as we thank God for the gift of pregnancy, we ought not to put the cart before the horse.” Source Vanguard Newspaper

28,069 Results pending as JAMB releases UTME 2011 Results

Barely six days after management of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) conducted the 2011 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Nigeria and six other foreign countries, it has released theresult to the public. The release of the results was made public on Friday, in Abuja by Dibu Ojerinde, Registrar and Chief Executive of JAMB at the headquarters of the National Universities Commission (NUC). However the conduct of the examination received criticisms from a cross section of Nigerians for beginning on a bumpy note last Saturday, as a result of the biometric technology introduced into the conduct of the examination for the first time. About 28,069 results are currently pending and to undergo further investigation by the board before their release, in an examination sat for by a total of 1,493,604 candidates. He said despite merger of the entrance examinations to become the UTME in 2010, a purpose meant to create more access to tertiary education, JAMB’s study showed a general preference for University education than other tertiary based institutions. Ojerinde said University of Lagos had the highest application of 99,195 candidates but it could only admit 9,507 candidates, closely followed by Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria which had 89,760 applications. He gave a break downof this year’s UTME scores, saying, 102,069 candidates scored above 250 while 2,892 candidates scored 300 and above. Those who scored between 200 and 249 stood at 485,426 candidates while those between 270 and 299 also stood at 31,444. The registrar who said the board would re-strategize on the use of the biometric data capturing technology in future examination debunked insinuations by the media that the biometric concept was unsuccessful. He said: “Biometric thumb printing and capturing device which was introduced in this year’s UTME has been a subject of wide discourse, some positive, while others negative. “However, to us in JAMB, it has recorded more successes than draw backs, for instance, the system in many centres ensured candidates were orderly and peaceful.”
JAMB also disclosed that candidates need not purchase another scratch card to check their results, rather they should use the same card used for applying for the examination to check their scores.

D'banj says Genevieve and I Are Past, I am Single & Searching

  Click for Full Image Size

We met D’banj at his Koko Lounge last week, having waited for hours; where he eventually opened up to Alonge Michael about his new deal with Kanye West’s Good Music, Jay Z and his relationship with Genevieve. The Mo’Hits crew has, no doubt, created a niche for itself in the Nigerian Music Industry and now the group has signed a merger with the international record label, Good Music owned by Kanye West, the international hip-hop star. D’Banj, the co-owner of Mo’ Hits records, unarguably, has turned a ‘super-superstar’ overnight as this merger which was signed on Kanye’s Birthday, June 8th, is now yielding positive result and the group, courtesy Don Jazzy and D’banj, have tried to take Nigerian music to the Global world. Obviously, this international collabo has brought the entire members of Mo’ Hits crew more fame and fortune. Read on...

It’s just God, hard-work, believing in Him and following your dreams. So the secret is God nothing more.

I’m very positive and more importantly I invest in myself. People may call it any name, it’s what I believe that I believe, so it’s always good to believe in yourself and follow your dreams. However, it’s still God.

(Pause) when I find the right person. I can marry when I see the right person to marry.

We’re not….why do you people keep calling Genevieve, that’s a long time we’ve even got over that but basically am still single and searching now.

If I see her, I will know.

Your Mama, no! I won’t do that, what for! You’re not serious…ah ah ah, oh my God!

I don’t think it’s greatest, I make mistakes but none can be stated to be greatest. One mistake I have ever made…I am trying to remember…to me everything that I have done has come out to be a success, even the ones I think they are mistakes, there are still something good that still come out of them.

Obviously I will start from where I meet yourself, you re-arrange now. We meet obstacles everyday, I have been trying to reach this stage for years and assuming I didn’t feature Snopp Doggy I would have featured someone else. If you like take everything I have from me, as long as I have my life, I will start all over again because good name is better than silver and gold and I’m D’banj till kingdom comes.

Who say so and moreover God is everywhere. I can serve Him in any country that I find myself, He understands the nature of my job and I know He will answer me in any part of the world I call Him.

I can’t tell you how close I am to God because it’s only Him that knows but I have a relationship with Him and when I talk to Him He answers me. I told Him I wanted a breakthrough, He did, I said I wanted a collabo with this and that, He made it possible, an MTV Award, He gave me and He has never given me what I don’t like.

Of course.

Who says He hasn’t, you never know when it comes to relationship, your best friend might be your wife and you might still be searching. Like when I met Don Jazzy he wasn’t my friend but now he is my best friend and that was about 10 years ago, it might be a person that I have dated before or a new person but I believe God will do it at the right time.

I don’t know, I don’t think about that because my dad never cheated on my mum and I think he is one of the most faithful human being I know.

I’m not planning to but I came from him, I must have something in common with him and when I get married I will know but right now I don’t.

I’m Gemini, for me I know Showbiz is an act so you act it, when I came people were like Koko was sex but I didn’t say Koko was sex but they decided to affiliate the word to some other things and we gave them what they wanted but deep down I still defecate and pee like you.

Those are the people that listen with one ear and they forget to hear my other good music; people just say whatever they want to say and I’m tired of convincing people and if they take their time to listen to the ballads they would know I’m an entertainer and that doesn’t mean people like me does not know what they are doing.

I love movies especially series, sometimes I play games with friends and I also go to Koko Lounge to unwind.

Well, that’s left for you to judge, you can fill in the gaps….

I don’t really have much female fans.

They are usually prevented and I don’t get to see them because my people around me don’t let them get to that extent and if I get to like you then something might go down. That’s now left for me to decide…

No, I don’t but I don’t tell you that I don’t f**k.

That’s what I also hear that I crack and smoke weeds too but ask my father, I was born like this, I mean very hyper. Anytime I try to drink something like Hennessy I was so dull and I’m a very lively person. Some say it’s when am high that I use glasses, it’s a lie, check my eyes out. (He removes glasses)

From you, everywhere, from God, my environment etc, they all form my sense of inspiration.

In life nobody wants to help and that’s why you need to keep your faith in God and that is why I don’t believe in anybody but God.

That’s why when I got to America I didn’t take their money but I signed and I moved, I did that to create a structure that my people will not need to beg. No one believed in us until now and in the next two months you will see a collaboration and from there everybody will start doing it because we are pioneers, we have already made it happen.

I don’t know and I don’t think I was nominated because of my collabo with Snopp, in fact, I was once nominated with Tuface in MOBO Awards and he won it but now levels have changed but we still don’t know the criteria that they are using to choose, if they give it to me based on that I will appreciate God the more but I want them to give it to me based on the fact that I have worked very hard.

They have given me a lot of roles to play that I have turned down except I own the movie and am not ready for that at this moment of my career. I am concentrating on my musical career first, once that is sealed as it has been sealed now, then, I can now consider appearing in Nollywood or Hollywood

CBN sets N10bn capital base for Islamic banks

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, yesterday announced minimum capital base of N10 billion for National Islamic Banks and N5 billion for regional Islamic Banks.
CBNDeputy Governor, Financial Sector Surveillance (FSS), Dr Kingsley Moghalu, announced this while addressing journalists in Lagos at a seminar on Non-Interest Banking in Nigeria organised by BusinessDay and Apostles in the Market Place.
“For the National Islamic Bank it is N10 billion and for the Regional Islamic Bank it is N5 billion,” he said
Experts who spoke at the seminar, however, faulted the apex bank on introduction of Islamic banking, saying Nigeria is a secular state and the CBN Act does not empower the apex bank to introduce Islamic banking.
Faulting the apex bank on the introduction of Islamic banking, Mr.  Eghes Eyieyien, chief executive, Pharez Limited, a Lagos-based consulting firm, said the “CBN cannot use a guideline to change the law, the CBN is not the National Assembly. If Islamic banking must happen, the CBN should send a draft bill to the National Assembly.”
Moghalu, however, strongly defended the decision of the apex bank to introduce Islamic banking in Nigeria, saying this is covered by the provision for specialised banking in the Banking and Other Financial Institutions Act, BOFIA, and the new banking framework.
He said the new guidelines on non-interest banking was based on a review of the guidelines issued in January in response to comments and concerns expressed by the public.
He said Islamic banking is a type of non-interest banking which is a specialised type of banking, adding that the aim is to deepen financial inclusion and that patronage is optional to members of the banking public.

Oshiomhole denies impregnating 24-yr-old undergraduate

In what appears to be a break of silence, Edo state Governor, comrade Adams Oshiomhole has described as unfounded the lingering rumour alleging that he impregnated an undergraduate female student, saying it was a calculated attempt by his political detractors to rubbish his name.
“There are rumours making the rounds that l had impregnated a lady from Uromi and that l was going to marry her. I’d like to state that it is all rumours. We shall not be deterred in our resolve to institute good governance in Edo state’’
The comrade governor was alleged to have impregnated a 24-yr-old undergraduate female student in one of the faculties at the state owned university, Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma. The rumour equally has it that the comrade governor may have also perfected plans to secretly get wedded to the said Lady who purportedly hails from Uromi, Esan North East local government area of the state, six months after the demise of his wife, Clara.
Governor Oshiomhole refuted the speculation while swearing in the newly appointed secretary to the state government, Dr Simon Imuokemhe at the festival Hall, Edo State Government House.
In his address, moments after administering relevant  oath of office, Governor Oshiomhole disclosed that he decided to settle for the immediate past Head of Service as the secretary to the state governor because he is “a resourceful personality who would always be ready to give very honest advice’’.
He noted that Imuokemhe was a loyal personality who has always lived up to the oath of not divulging information to unauthorised persons and ever ready to speak the truth to power irrespective of the consequences thereafter.
“Imuokemhe and I came from a place that is not close to civilisation and as such during the period Osunbor was Governor (even though illegal), I thought Imuokemhe as Head of Service would be revealing to me some happenings in the government. But he never did and took very seriously that portion of not divulging information in the oath of office. After my swearing-in as Governor, I thought of sacking him because of that but someone advised me not to sack as we need somebody with experience in government.
“The man is loyal to his boss and we have found in him a very resourceful personality who will give his honest advice. We have in him someone who will speak truth to power no matter the consequence.”
According to the Governor, the new SSG voluntarily retired in February this as Head of Service (HoS) to give way for other Permanent Secretaries in the state to aspire to the position even though he still has some years to serve.
“After one year into our administration, he personally came to me and said he wanted to resign not because he was not comfortable with my style, in fact he said he was enjoying it but for the fact that he wanted other Permanent Secretaries to rise to that position before their compulsory retirement. When I looked his age, I found out that he could even another administration as HoS even though he has served three administrations including this present one.
Meanwhile, other Permanent Secretaries were being retired compulsorily. We pressed him on to stay for another year. Again, this year reminded me of this and on February 28, we accepted his resignation’’
“For me this is uncommon in a society where people falsify age to remain in service. Today’s appointment therefore is a reward for those truthful qualities”. He said.

Gov. Rochas Okorocha orders refund of school fees in IMO

The Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Anayo Okorocha has directed that his free education programme for primary and secondary schools in the state begins with immediate effect.

The governor, who is expected to swear-in the newly appointed commissioners, acting chairman, Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers and three others, said those who had paid for the current school year to report to their principals/headmasters for refund of such fees.

He also ordered principals, teachers and staff of the state school system to immediately stop collecting fees/levies from students.

The governor equally directed that the N150,000 tuition fees paid by students of the state-owned university be reversed to the old fee structure.
Giving the directives over the weekend, the governor stated that unlike the former directive, he wanted the free education already declared to commence from the day he was sworn in as the 14th governor of the state.

Owelle Okorocha, who made these remarks while receiving some federal legislators at the Government House, Owerri, restated that education was compulsory in the state and that non-compliance would attract punishment for parents and guardians.

While congratulating the Deputy Speaker, Emeka Ihedioha on his emergence, Owelle Okorocha, who insisted that his administration was about the general good of the state and not party affiliations called on all elected public officials to shun party differences and pursue common goals in the state.

He revealed that he would convene a forum for both those that won and lost the 2011 elections to seek common front to reduce distractions through unnecessary court cases.

The governor reminded the federal legislators of their primary role in addressing certain germane issues of their constituencies including roads construction, erosion menace, second Niger Bridge, among others, expatiating further that their performance and connection with their respective constituencies would ensure their continuity in rendering quality legislative service to the people.

Okorocha maintained that the legislators must sustain peace and unity of the Nigerian state through close cooperation irrespective of the geographical divisions of the country, asserting that he was a firm believer in “one Nigeria”.

Earlier in a speech, Ihedioha who led the legislators said they were on the courtesy call to extend the goodwill of the House of Representatives to the governor.

He agreed that there was need for a positive synergy between the state government and the national house to deliver the much wanted dividends of democracy and pledged to work cordially with the government.

In his own contribution, Senator Osita Izunaso expressed the belief that the vexed issues of dichotomy between the Abuja and state politicians were over, pointing out that with the Okorocha administration, there would be beneficial cooperation between the groups.

In a vote of thanks by Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi, he stressed the importance of active synergy between the arms of government for the benefit of the people.

In the team were legislators from Enugu, Anambra, Ebony, Imo and Benue states.
Meanwhile, the state House of Assembly has commended the governor for being in tune with the hopes and aspirations of Imo civil servants as typified in the prompt response to the payment of salary arrears owed by the past administration.

A resolution dated June 15, signed by the Clerk of the Imo State House of Assembly, Mr. Chris Duru, stated that Resolution 351 was passed by the House during its sitting on Tuesday, June 14.

Don’t Send Our Children To Death Zone’ - UNILAG Parents warns on NYSC posting

Members of the University of Lagos Parents’ Forum have called on President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Assembly to instruct the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig.-Gen. Maharasu Tsiga, not to post their wards to the northern part of Nigeria, which they described as “death zone.”

In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the forum, B. Majekodunmi, and the Secretary, Victoria Osinuga, in Lagos, the parents said they were having “unimaginable nightmares” as another posting was due in July and they feared that their wards might be posted to the North, “where their brethren met their untimely and violent death.”

The parents said, “We, the University of Lagos Parents’ Forum, humbly appeal to the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, and the National Assembly to use their good offices to prevail on the Director-General of NYSC not to post our children to the northern part of this country for their national youth service.

“This request is very urgent and borne out of the fact that we, the parents of the children from the southern part of this country who were butchered to death by some hoodlums from the north for rendering selfless service to the nation, are licking our wounds.

“We take our stand against the posting of our children to the northern states of Nigeria. We want them posted either to their states of origin or within their geo-political zone. We are also calling for an urgent modification or repealing of the decree setting up the National Youth Service Corps, as we have since become a democratic nation.”

The forum recalled the post-election violence in the north, which led to the death of corps members, saying, “In some areas, religious crisis occurred, houses and churches were burnt, and innocent lives were lost in the process. These children are our investment, who had acquired knowledge over the years and for no just cause wasted away.

“It is for this reason that we want to cry out loud this time because we are in Nigeria where anything goes except someone raises an alarm and fights this just cause to a logical conclusion. As parents, it is too dangerous to be silent.”

Pasuma completes N150 Million Mansion in Lagos

Fuji star, Pasuma is currently away in the united States, “for business and pleasure” according to those close to him. And, when he returns on February 28, he‘ll finally be making that long overdue move, from his Omole flat to his own property in Ojodu, Lagos.

Reliable sources told e-Punch the husky-voiced performer, who‘s taking Fuji to new audiences and blurring the line between Fuji and urbane music, ‘‘does not plan to return to his old home when he gets back.”

As at last week, final touches were being put to Pasuma‘s property (already nicknamed Paso‘s Palace by those close to him) while some of his kids and workers moved belongings from his Omole home into the new duplex located inside River Valley Estate in Ojodu, around Berger in Lagos.

Since his debut with Eru Owa Records, Pasuma has achieved unbelievable success - thanks to his unusual voice, charming looks, fashion direction, and cult followership from fans across South-West Nigeria and beyond. But he has yet to amass the kind of fortune his mentor, KWAM 1 boasts of. For years, many wondered why he was still living in a rented apartment; and why, like the other Fuji acts in his category, he was not parading a fleet of cars.

But, as he told this reporter in 2007, it was only a matter of time. ‘‘My fans have supported me a lot; and I know what they expect from me. I will not let them down, he said at the time, admitting that he was already “building a house around Ojodu in Lagos,” even though he wasn‘t sure if he was going to live in the property or not.

Pasuma‘s journey started from the notorious Mushin, in Lagos; where he lived like the normal half-educated ghetto youth, unsure of what path his future would take. He told e-Punch last year, that it was KWAM 1’s 1984 album, Talazo Fuji that inspired and encouraged him to take to Fuji as a career. He continues to see KWAM 1, as a mentor and father.

Pasuma lived with his mother in Mushin, before moving to a nearby flat where he lived and worked while his career blossomed in the nineties. He drove a Mercedes Benz coupe, favoured designer labels, romanced entertainment journalists, and collaborated with dancehall and hip hop acts. In no time, he became the Fuji darling of the nineties; taking Fuji, (just like KWAM 1) to audiences who hitherto would never had identified with the art. Pasuma dragged the genre by the hand, leading it straight into the mainstream while, over the years, retaining elements that made sure the grassroots-underground followers never felt left out...

In African Women’s Soccer, Lesbianism is still an Obstacle - Eucharia Uche, Nigerian women's soccer coach

Eucharia Uche, Nigerian women's soccer coach, called the presence of lesbians on the national team a "worrisome experience."
The Nigerian national squad is participating in its sixth Women's World Cup.
Over the past two years, as Nigeria progressed toward the Women’s World Cup, which begins Sunday in Germany, Uche said that she has used religion in an attempt to rid her team of homosexual behavior, which she termed a “dirty issue,” and “spiritually, morally very wrong.”
FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, states as part of its mission a desire to use the game in “overcoming social and cultural obstacles for women with the ultimate aim of improving women’s standing in society.” But the story of Nigeria’s Super Falcons illustrates the cultural obstacles that remain for many African women who play soccer decades after more assertive efforts at inclusivity occurred in places like the United States, Germany, Norway, Sweden and more recently in Brazil.
Japan and North Korea have recently supplanted China as Asian powers. For the first time, Colombia has qualified for the Women’s World Cup, a quadrennial tournament that began in 1991 and now includes 16 teams. Equatorial Guinea from west-central Africa will also make its inaugural appearance, and Nigeria will participate for the sixth time.
Uche said she had never witnessed her own players participating in homosexual activity. Instead, she said that she had relied on rumors, speculation and news media accounts to form her belief that lesbian behavior had been common in the Nigerian team.
“When rumors are strong, you are bound to believe it is happening,” Uche, 38, said in a telephone interview from Nigeria’s World Cup training camp in Saalfelden, Austria.
In March, Uche made similar remarks to The Daily Sun newspaper of Nigeria. The newspaper also quoted a former technical assistant for the country’s soccer federation, James Peters, saying that he had removed some players from Nigeria’s women’s team last year, “not because they were not good players, but because they were lesbians.”
That was not her style, Uche said from Austria. Instead, she said, she had regularly brought in Pentecostal ministers to pray with and counsel her players. Her players routinely read the Bible and sometimes prayed together, Uche said.
“The issue of lesbianism is common,” said Uche, who previously played in the World Cup for Nigeria and described herself as a Christian who is married and a mother of two children. “I came to realize it is not a physical battle; we need divine intervention in order to control and curb it. I tell you it worked for us. This is a thing of the past. It is never mentioned.”
On a continent where homosexual behavior is widely considered immoral, lesbians are sometimes ostracized and subjected to beatings. In countries like South Africa and Zimbabwe, some women are raped in a so-called corrective treatment for homosexual behavior.
In one high-profile case in South Africa, a top female soccer player and lesbian activist, Eudy Simelane, 31, was murdered in 2008. Although one of her attackers testified that robbery was the motive in the stabbing death, Simelane’s death became the focus of a campaign to draw attention to violence against gays and lesbians.
Last year, Nigeria accused Equatorial Guinea of using at least one and perhaps two male players on its team because of their supposed masculine appearance. Soccer officials from Equatorial Guinea called the charge unfounded, saying it stemmed from an “inferiority complex” among rival African teams.

The dirty things Nollywood Actress do because of Money

Click for Full Image Size

The notion of most Nollywood actresses is that the meager they receive from acting would not give them the high standard of living they crave for, hence they engaged in corporate prostitution.
It has become very rampant in recent time that most of our so called popular faces engage in corporate prostitution.

According to sources, the messy deal is carried out both locally and internationally as those who get involved have people who hook them up locally in various states of the federation and internationally by publicists and managers.

Local charges, we gathered, depends on the class of the actress and the buyer’s financial capability, as we learnt that the fees range from #150,000 to #200,000 thousand per round of sex, while politicians pay as much as #500,000 per night to top actresses and go as far as giving them jeeps and other cars for one month of service.

We equally gathered that months of dating and warming the bed of top politicians have earned most of Nollywood big babes’ properties in different parts of the country. Another avenue is created through political conferences which have over the years been alleged to witness an influx of Nollywood gorgeous babes who always land juicy appointments to make the night cold-free. It was informed that the pay they usually go home with from the political conferences depends on the ability of the girl to play her game perfectly, as contracts and proposals are eventually signed the following day.

A source disclosed to us that lots of fast rising actresses hustle to get the contact of state Governors whom they call to get appointments either for one night deal or for a full weekend. But the business does not pay all the time. We were told of a very controversial fast rising actress who struggled to get the contact of a South South Governor. After weeks of unanswered phone calls, the number one man of the oil rich state picked the call and gave the actress an appointment. She allegedly traveled by air from Lagos state to the state capital, spent a full weekend with the Governor and came back empty handed. The story was so funny that the actress was said to have only gotten the privilege of riding in a Governor’s convoy for the very first time in her life.

It was equally disclosed that this derogatory business is equally done on the international scene. We gathered that our intelligent showbiz babes reportedly lower their guards during their foreign trips. It was said that for those who engage in this act, contacts are usually dropped with United Kingdom, US and Canada based Nigerians who hide under the umbrella of artiste managers and publicists but who are, in actual fact, engaged in the pimping business.

We equally discovered that the so called management companies strike such deal with foreigners, invite the girls to come over on purported tours or to perform in shows only to hand them over to randy men who pay them handsomely.
It was alleged that global chat engines such as Twitter and Face book have provided good platforms for numerous “RUNS BABES” in the showbiz industry to meets foreign based prospects and customers and these ones negotiate their arrangements themselves without any middleman and on such ‘deals’ they get whatever they can negotiate.

We even gathered how a top married actress once jetted to Europe to have a week’s tryst with a top Nigerian footballer and was paid 3 million naira by the younger player.

Another A-list star actress was reported of being invited by a syndicate to Europe with the promise of getting 10,000 thousand dollars but when she got there, she met the shock of her life as the the so called international business men were five fast Nigerian boys who locked her up in an apartment and gang raped continuously for 10 days before releasing her. Ini Edo and Oge Okoye when the going was good
Quarrels are an integral part of showbiz everywhere in the world. It often begins as a means of protecting interests-business and emotions. For two of Nollywood’s distinguished actresses, Ini Edo and Oge Okoye, Hints Weekly reliably scooped that the two who used to be best of friends are fighting the battles of their lives, unknown to many people. Our source said the problem which has been lingering for a while now started a few years ago and has continued to retrogress, in spite of spirited efforts by a mutual friend of the twosome to resolve the matter. The feud started a few years back when Ini accused Oge Okoye of being behind some of her private issues which found its way into the press. Two particular instances were, the abortion tales as well as the case of a certain US-based business man who was dating Ini, in spite of the fact that his wife was Ini’s friend, which broke in the media sometime ago.

“That particular story which found its way into the press was distorted; however Ini had accused Oge Okoye of being behind the rumuors at the time. Although Oge vehemently denied it, Ini did not forget that experience. It was at this point that she decided that she would sack her Personal Assistant and move out of her residence at Anthony Village. That was the origin of the bad blood,” the source said.

However Oge Okoye’s marriage to Mr. Duru who is based in Holland, availed her the opportunity to level up. She was said to have inflamed the situation by telling some of her close associates that she was keeping to herself because of her new status as a married woman, insinuating that people like Ini Edo who were not married yet, could afford to hobnob as they wished in the social circles.

“By then, Ini Edo was yet to marry, and that sent a lot of bad signals in the relationship. At that point jealousy had also crept into their once blossoming friendship, so much that the twosome started keeping each other at arm’s length”, the source added.

Hints Weekly however gathered that the peak of the bad blood came when Oge Okoye was excluded from the Globacom Ambassadors’ List, the endorsement deal, which is reputed to have fetched over thirty million naira each for the artistes. According to the source, Oge Okoye, still believes that Ini Edo, may have secretly worked to make sure that she was dropped from the list.

“The Globacom Ambassadors’ deal was brokered with the help of Uche Jombo. The arrangement was originally for members of the clique, which includes people like Desmond Elliot, Ini Edo and Uche Jombo. But the company wanted an expanded list which brought in other artistes, however people in Nollywood still believe that they did a lot to discourage the company from signing on certain people. I think that is where the problem between Oge and Ini as regards that deal starts from. She believes that Ini Edo used her connections with Uche to scuttle her chances. But it is only the managers at Globacom that can say what their criteria for picking who the ambassador should be. I guess, the two artistes need to find a common ground to sort out the matter”.

English powerhouse Chelsea has appointed former Porto coach Andre Villas-Boas as its new manager. The Portuguese tactician has signed a three-year deal with the London giants.

Chelsea was in the market for a new manager ever since the departure of Carlo Ancelotti in May and they have now found its man. The 33-year-old Villas-Boas resigned as Porto coach on Tuesday and now returns to the club where he previously worked at Chelsea as Jose Mourinho's assistant.

"Andre was the outstanding candidate for the job. He is one of the most talented young managers in football today and has already achieved much in a relatively short space of time," a statement on the Chelsea website reads.

"His ambition, drive and determination matches that of Chelsea and we are confident Andre's leadership of the team will result in greater successes in major domestic and European competitions.

"Andre will bring his coaching experience back to a club he is already very familiar with, having previously worked here for three years. He has always been highly regarded at Chelsea and everyone here looks forward to welcoming him back and working with him."

After his appointment, attention will now turn to which players Villas-Boas and the club's directors will look to bring in ahead of the new campaign.

Chelsea has already been linked with some of Villas-Boas' former Porto stars, such as Colombia striker Radamel Falcao, a player who could reportedly follow his former boss to west London this summer.
